Smart Technologies for Traffic

Cities are turning to smart traffic technologies to reduce energy waste and improve road safety, as traffic congestion in cities is becoming more frequent. This helps passengers and drivers save time, reduces carbon emissions and delays in traffic.

The technology behind it is based on software and hardware. The former is the subcomponent which executes, while the second is the command and control center. Both are supported by advanced sensors and processing techniques such as ANPR (automotive license plate recognition) that records information about the vehicles’ movements, and also detect traffic signals.

Depending on the method used, data can be processed on-device by smart traffic lights, or sent to a cloud. The latter is more sophisticated modeling and predictive analysis that can stave off traffic congestion and to harmonize public transport schedules. This way, they can reduce average travel times by 25%, cut time to signal by 40%, and reduce emissions by 20 percent according to Carnegie Mellon University.

In addition to decreasing traffic signals’ control delays Smart traffic light system could also increase the flow of pedestrians as well as micromobility vehicles such e-bikes and e-scooters. They aren’t able to adhere to the traditional traffic law regarding preemption of signals. In London E-scooter accidents increased by 2,800% during the first half 2021.
